TISZAVIRAG SWIMMING POOL

Szeged - Ungarn

  • CUSTOMER: Municipality of Szeged | Szegedi Sport és Fürdők Kft.
  • ARCHITECT / DESIGNER: TSPC Group
  • PHOTOGRAPHER: Hlinka Zsolt

Szeged, Hungary, is home to a unique building that enriches the city. The Tiszavirág swimming pool is an indoor sports pool which, in addition to being suitable for amateur and competitive sports, also offers spaces for leisure and recreation. The new complex is truly breath-taking with an Olympic swimming pool, used for international and national competitions, from 50 by 25 meters with 10 lanes spread over a net area of 13,300 square meters. The races can be viewed from stands which seat around 1,200 spectators.

The main pool receives a large amount of natural lighting from above and from the large, glazed side walls, but a complex artificial lighting system has also been installed, suitable for live television broadcasts thanks to 108 professional SQUARE PRO GLASS floodlights for the sports areas, fully integrated into the suspended ceiling for glare-free lighting. The use of LED light sources for all fixtures contributes to reduced operating costs and significant savings in energy management.

With a 25 by 15 meter, 6 lane warm-up pool and a 20 by 12.5 meter training pool, as well as a indoor and outdoor leisure pool, the complex has everything for a modern sports facility. The building also has a conference room, association offices, a children's centre, a study room, commercial areas, dining and a wellness department.

The pool area and the panoramic terrace are separated by a glass wall. The garden offers green spaces for outdoor relaxation. The complex offers several solutions aimed at creating a sustainable environment: 320 new trees have been planted in the area; 750 solar panels have been installed on the roof of the building and purified pool water is recycled along with rainwater and used to irrigate the surrounding landscaped areas and green roofs.

The design of the building, especially the oblique walls and the mechanical and electrical systems, required special consideration from the designers and consultants. The use of a 3D BIM model was an excellent tool to present the building to the customer and to refine it, optimizing design time by involving the various participants from the initial phases for all necessary verifications.

The structure was built as part of the Modern Cities Program and complies with all regulations of swimming governing bodies FINA and LEN. Water polo in Szeged is an important bulwark of the Hungarian sports scene which the new facility will further strengthen. It is an ideal place for swimming and water polo while also providing a modern facility for talent management, professional sports and recreational activities for the benefit of the community.
