Europe has given the most prestigious European award to the Royal Museums of Turin for the restoration of the Chapel of the Shroud, which starting this year has re-opened for viewing after the work that has allowed the rebirth of this jewel of Baroque architecture.
The European Commission and Europa Nostra, Europe's leading heritage network, have announced the winners of Europe's most prestigious award, the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Award 2019. 25 winners from 16 countries were selected for outstanding achievements in conservation, research, education, training and awareness. Among the winners of the Europa Nostra Award 2019 in the Conservation category is the Chapel of the Holy Shroud of Turin.
The restoration was funded by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, the San Paolo company, the foundation La Stampa-Specchio dei Tempi, the council for the enhancement of the Artistic and Cultural Assets of Turin and by Iren S.p.A. with the contribution of Performance iN Lighting for the interior and exterior lighting of the cupola.
The European jury praised the project for being "a careful response to a dramatic event that occurred in one of the most important Baroque buildings in Europe. It was technically challenging, given the very particular structure of the building, but maximum preservation of the existing structure was guaranteed."
