SMART GYMNASIUM

Bordeaux - Francja

SMART, the "smart" gymnasium dedicated to innovation, training, and research on sports practices.

The SMART (Sport, Movement, Ambition, Research, Technology) project goes beyond the simple use of sports infrastructure to integrate technological research and development. The goal: improving the performance of elite athletes. A living laboratory dedicated to practice, educational innovation, and understanding human motor skills. The facility has also been selected as a preparation center for the 2024 Olympic Games (Terre de Jeux 2024 label).

This building, designed by the GPAA architectural firm, with a total surface area of 4,900 square meters and certified HQE and BEPOS E3C1, is located in the heart of the Pessac campus, on the outskirts of Bordeaux. It houses an instrumented and connected gym, a physical training room, a dance studio, a fitness room, a climbing wall, an indoor golf driving range, a research room equipped with the latest human movement analysis technologies, as well as teaching and seminar spaces.

It is within this framework that PERFORMANCE iN LIGHTING was entrusted by KYPSELI (a fluid, energy, and environmental design firm) with the task of designing the lighting for the main room, the research room, and the climbing wall.

The main gym is designed to accommodate formats ranging from basketball to handball. However, the key difference from a traditional gym is the presence of 11 cameras, which capture the athletes' every movement in 3D. To achieve competition-level lighting levels (1200 average lux, uniformity greater than 0.8), 36 professional floodlights LASER+ 10 EXTREME RM with a color temperature of 5000 K and a color rendering index of 90 were used. Horizontal and vertical lighting were achieved with very precise settings to avoid dazzling the cameras. Lux meter measurements were taken at 135 horizontal and 135 vertical points for each of the 11 cameras, representing more than 1600 points recorded. Power is provided by remote DALI drivers (up to 100 m), providing all the flexibility required to adapt the lighting level to different scenarios.

The research room is sized to the size of a basketball court. The symmetrical bilateral lighting is obtained installing the fittings at a height of 10 m, a total of 16 floodlights LASER+ 10 with asymmetrical optics providing the required average 850 lux for a uniformity of 0.85. In this second case, glare control is also a major challenge to ensure search accuracy.

Finally, the ultra-modern climbing wall provides a space for challenging challenges. A lighting system using 8 floodlights LASER+ 10 EXTREME ensures comfort and uniformity with an average illumination of 700 lux.
